Notes: Produced between 1970 and 1971, the Omega Speedmaster 145.022-69 is among the most prolific of the “Pre-Moon” references. Yet despite its relative abundance, this reference is anything but mundane. It captures a fascinating chapter in the evolution of the Speedmaster, marking a transition from the tool watch of the 1960s to the Moon-era icon we know today. This period brought about a flurry of changes: the last use of the Hippocampus caseback, the commemorative Apollo XI 1969 variant, the appearance of “Straight Writing,” the move from DON to DNN bezels, and the vibrant Racing Dial. But nestled among these planned developments was one curious error Omega certainly didn’t intend—the now-legendary ‘220 bezel.’ Sometime around September 1970, during a font transition on the tachymeter scale, a production plate was etched with a “220” mark in place of the correct “225.” The mistake slipped through quality control and into the market, appearing on a limited run of Speedmasters before being quietly corrected. Today, surviving examples with this error bezel are highly prized by collectors for both their rarity and the charming imperfection they represent in Omega’s otherwise meticulous legacy.Offered here is an exceptionally clean and unpolished 145.022-69, complete with its original and correct ‘220 error’ bezel in stunning condition. The dial shows a warm, even patina, and the watch is paired with its original 1039 stretch bracelet, making this a truly cohesive and well-preserved example. A rare chance to own a significant and increasingly elusive piece of Speedmaster history.
